Researching Dual-Fuel Systems

Dual-Fuel (Hybrid Heat): What is it and how does it work?

A dual-fuel system (also called Hybrid Heat) is a single heating and cooling system that runs on two heat sources instead of one: an electric heat pump outside and a gas furnace inside, sharing the same ducts and thermostat. You control it like any other system. It automatically switches between the two based on the outdoor temperature, running whichever one is cheaper to use at that moment. In summer, the heat pump doubles as your air conditioner.

Across the year, it works in three modes:

Summer: Cooling

The heat pump works like a central air conditioner, pulling heat and humidity out of your home to keep it cool and dry.

Mild Weather: Heat Pump

Between about 35°F and 65°F, the heat pump does all the heating. Moving warmth in from the outside air costs far less than burning gas to make it.

Deep Cold: Gas Furnace

Once it gets cold enough (usually around 30°F to 35°F), the gas furnace turns on for strong, fast heat.

Dual-Fuel vs. Heat Pump Only vs. Furnace/AC Combo

A dual-fuel system sits between an all-electric heat pump and a traditional gas furnace. Here's how the three compare:

Feature Dual-Fuel Heat Pump Alone Furnace + AC
Heating Heat pump, with a gas furnace for deep cold Heat pump only Gas furnace only
Cooling Yes, the heat pump cools Yes, the heat pump cools Yes, with a separate AC
Running cost Lowest; uses the cheaper fuel each day Low in mild weather, higher in deep cold Higher; always burns gas
Upfront cost Highest (two heat sources) Moderate Moderate
Needs a gas line Yes No Yes

Key Benefits of a Dual-Fuel System

Pairing two heat sources in one system gives a dual-fuel setup a few clear advantages:

  • Lower heating bills. The system automatically runs whichever fuel costs less at the moment, so you're not overpaying for heat in any season.
  • Comfort in any weather. The heat pump handles mild days efficiently, and the gas furnace delivers strong, fast heat when it turns cold.
  • Heating and cooling in one system. The same heat pump that warms your home in mild weather is your air conditioner all summer, so there's no separate AC to buy, install, or maintain.
  • Less wear on your equipment. Splitting the workload between two heat sources means neither one runs as hard, which can extend the life of both.

Tax Credits & Rebates For Dual-Fuel Components

A dual-fuel system pairs a high-efficiency heat pump with a furnace, the kind of equipment that often qualifies for energy-efficiency incentives. Savings can come from a few places, and we help you track them down:

Federal Incentives

Federal energy-efficiency programs for qualifying heat pumps and high-efficiency furnaces change from year to year. Whether one currently applies depends on the rules in effect and the equipment you choose.

Utility & Manufacturer Rebates

Many utilities and equipment makers offer rebates on qualifying high-efficiency systems. Programs and amounts vary by provider and location.

We Handle the Paperwork

The Hulse Heating & Air team checks what currently applies in your area and files the paperwork for anything you qualify for.

Deciding if Hybrid Heating is right for my home

A dual-fuel system fits some homes better than others. Here's how to tell:

When a Dual-Fuel System Fits Best

  • You have both gas and electric service. A dual-fuel system runs on both, so it needs a gas or propane line plus the electrical capacity for a heat pump.
  • You want to lower your heating bills. A dual-fuel system runs whichever fuel is cheaper each day, so it costs less than burning gas all winter or leaning on a heat pump in deep cold.
  • You want dependable heat in any weather. The gas furnace delivers strong, fast heat for the times a heat pump on its own would struggle to keep up.

When to Consider Other Options

  • You have no gas or propane line. Without a fuel line for the furnace, an all-electric heat pump is the more practical choice.
  • You have no ductwork. A dual-fuel system moves air through ducts, so without them a ductless mini-split system fits better.
  • You want the lowest upfront cost. A dual-fuel system lowers your energy bills over time, but it's two pieces of equipment, so it costs more upfront than a single furnace or heat pump.

Properly Sizing A Dual-Fuel System To Fit My Home

A dual-fuel system only saves money if the two units are sized correctly and built to work together. Two things matter most:

Professional Sizing

A licensed professional runs a Manual J load calculation to size both the heat pump and the furnace to your home. An oversized system cycles on and off too fast and leaves rooms humid, while an undersized one runs constantly and never quite keeps up. The calculation weighs your insulation, windows, and local climate, not just square footage.

Matching the Components

The heat pump, indoor coil, furnace, and blower all have to be compatible. The blower has to move the right amount of air for the heat pump (a variable-speed blower works best), and the whole system runs on a dual-fuel-capable smart thermostat that can switch between the two heat sources. We confirm everything matches before installation.

Efficiency Ratings: SEER2, HSPF2, and AFUE

A dual-fuel system is measured by three efficiency ratings, one for each job it does: cooling and heating from the heat pump, and heating from the gas furnace. Like miles per gallon for a car, a higher rating means a more efficient unit. Just compare like with like: SEER2 to SEER2, not SEER to SEER2.

  • SEER2 (cooling): how efficiently the heat pump cools across a full season, with temperatures ranging from about 65°F to 104°F.
  • HSPF2 (heat pump heating): how efficiently the heat pump heats over a full heating season.
  • AFUE (furnace heating): the share of fuel the gas furnace turns into heat. A 90% AFUE furnace turns 90% of the gas it burns into usable heat.

You may still run across older SEER and HSPF numbers while you shop. That's because the SEER2 and HSPF2 labels reflect stricter test procedures the Department of Energy adopted in 2023 — the equipment didn't get less efficient, the measuring stick just got tougher, which trims every rating down a notch. A heat pump that once carried a 15 SEER label, for example, now reads closer to 14.3 SEER2. When you're weighing two systems, line up the same rating against itself rather than pitting an old number against a new one.

Minimum Standards by Region

The U.S. Department of Energy sets minimum efficiency standards by region, so the lowest rating you can buy depends on where you live:

  • North
    • 14.0 SEER/ 13.4 SEER2
    • 8.0 HSPF/6.7 HSPF2
    • 80% AFUE
  • Southeast
    • 15.0 SEER/ 14.3 SEER2
    • 8.0 HSPF/6.7 HSPF2
    • 90% AFUE
  • Southwest
    • 15.0 SEER/ 14.3 SEER2
    • 8.0 HSPF/6.7 HSPF2
    • 90% AFUE

Why SEER2 and HSPF2 Replaced the Old Ratings

SEER2 and HSPF2 are updated standards from the U.S. Department of Energy. The older SEER and HSPF ratings were measured under very precise lab conditions. The newer tests add higher static pressure to better reflect how a system actually runs in a real home, so the numbers are a more realistic guide to everyday performance.

EER2 vs. SEER2

Both rate an air conditioner's cooling efficiency, but at different temperatures. EER2 measures efficiency at a peak cooling temperature of 95°F, while SEER2 averages efficiency across a full cooling season (65°F to 104°F). EER2 shows how the unit holds up on the hottest days, and SEER2 shows how it performs over the whole season.

How To Maintain An Existing Dual-Fuel System For Optimal Performance and Savings

A dual-fuel system has two heat sources, so a regular tune-up covers both. A standard service from Hulse Heating & Air includes:

  • Cleaning the outdoor heat pump coil and clearing debris around it
  • Checking the refrigerant charge and the reversing valve that switches the heat pump between heating and cooling
  • Replacing or cleaning the air filter
  • Inspecting the furnace's burner, heat exchanger, and venting
  • Testing the blower motor and airflow
  • Checking the electrical connections, contactor, and capacitors
  • Confirming the thermostat switches between the two heat sources at the right temperature

Has it been a while since your dual-fuel system had a tune-up? Because a hybrid setup relies on both a heat pump and a furnace working in sync, our experienced technicians service both sides and fine-tune the switch-over point so you get efficient, dependable comfort in every season. Upgrading To A New Dual-Fuel System: Installation Expectations

A dual-fuel system ties an outdoor heat pump and an indoor gas furnace together under one smart thermostat, so installation takes a few extra steps to set up and fine-tune. Here's how it usually goes:

Infrastructure Check

We confirm your home has both gas and electric service, inspect the ductwork and airflow, and make sure the thermostat wiring can handle a dual-fuel control, running a new wire if the old one is outdated.

Installing the Equipment

The outdoor heat pump and the matching indoor coil go in, along with the furnace if it's being replaced, and everything is matched to your ductwork.

Wiring the Smart Thermostat

A dual-fuel-capable thermostat is connected so it can switch automatically between the heat pump and the furnace.

Setting the Balance Point

The balance point is the outdoor temperature where the system switches from the heat pump to the furnace. We set it to your local electricity and gas rates so the system always runs the cheaper source.

Startup and Walkthrough

We test heating and cooling in every mode, then walk you through the thermostat before wrapping up.

Dual-Fuel System FAQs

No. The two heating sources never run at the same time. The efficient heat pump handles mild days, and the gas furnace only kicks in during deep cold, so you use less gas overall and avoid the high electric bills a heat pump alone runs up in freezing weather.

It switches at a balance point, the outdoor temperature where the furnace takes over from the heat pump. There are two ways to set it. The equipment balance point is where the heat pump can no longer keep up with your home's heat loss. The economic balance point is where running the furnace becomes cheaper than running the heat pump, based on your local energy prices. We set your system to the economic balance point, so it always uses the cheaper fuel.

Often, yes. If your gas or propane furnace is in good shape and its blower can move the air a heat pump needs (a variable-speed blower is ideal), we can pair it with a new outdoor heat pump and a matching coil, turning your standard setup into a dual-fuel system without replacing the furnace.

Yes, and it's one of the best times to do it. Since you're already replacing the outdoor unit, you can install a heat pump instead of a like-for-like air conditioner. The heat pump cools your home in summer just as the AC did, and it pairs with your existing furnace for heating, which is what makes it a dual-fuel system. The main added cost is upgrading from an air conditioner to a heat pump.

Yes. A standard thermostat can't manage the switching. You'll need a dual-fuel-capable smart thermostat, set up for hybrid systems, that watches the outdoor temperature and decides when to switch between electricity and gas.
